Hollywood Nights

Many of you may not be aware that CARH is a privately funded not-for-profit, dependent solely on the generosity of our community. The majority of our funding is received through our local community based household recycling program. We do not receive State or Federal funding. CARH supporters should be proud of the fact that their donation big or small makes a huge difference in the lives of those with intellectual disabilities as can be seen in the photos in the next two pages! One of the favorite events for our clients is our Annual Summer Balls. These lavish themed events, held at the Hilton Hotels in Newark, Concord and Sacramento, provide a much needed social outlet for hundreds of special individuals allowing them to experience an evening of fine dining and dancing. Highlights include a raffle and a chance to be crowned King and Queen of the Ball. This year’s theme “Hollywood Nights” was particularly popular giving our guests an opportunity to enjoy the glam, glitter and glitz of dressing for the red carpet.

Adding to the Hollywood theme surprise guest, Marilyn Monroe impersonator/singer, Catherine Grillos, really spiced things up. As our guests enjoyed their salads, Marilyn made her entrance, opening her act with “Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend”. Marilyn created a lot of excitement visiting each table making sure to leave an “impression”.

As she made her rounds, she draped her red and black feathered boa over our guests heads and planted big red kisses on the foreheads and cheeks of our gentlemen guests. As the meal progressed Marilyn continued to entertain everyone by singing more of her famous songs including “I Wanna Be Loved By You”, “Some Like It Hot” and “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”. Live DJ, David Goulart, of Unforgettable Memories, kept everyone’s feet moving. In fact, dancing feet quickly filled the dance floor when Lady Gaga’s hit, “Paparazzi” filled the air. All of our guests had a “Ball” dancing the night away. Some of our guests created huge conga lines which everyone eagerly joined. After dessert, a raffle and drawing for King and Queen of the Ball took place. Several lucky raffle winners were chosen to receive some terrific prizes. The King and Queen of the Balls were crowned and bestowed with a bag full of gifts. Hollywood Nights in Newark and Concord together brought much deserved happiness to a total of 584 guests. It gives us great pleasure to be able to provide exciting memories for so many wonderful individuals. It is all due to the support of our community, thank you.

We would also like to give a special thank you to Marilyn for a stunning and memorable performance.
