The Michael Guidotti Center, located at the CARH Headquarters site, is now available for rent. Built in 1995, the center continues to be used for many CARH activities such as bingo, movie matinees and dances for our clients. There are times that it is not in use and can provide an inviting and attractive space for community groups or individuals to use for committee meetings, seminars, social events, recitals and other general attendance events. The center is available for rent during the weekday and most weekends. For more information please call Mary or Corinne at 510-537-6611. Throughout December CARH celebrated our 31st Annual Jingle Bell Balls at Hilton Hotels in Concord, Newark and Oakland. For years these famed events have brought joy to hundreds of individuals living with intellectual disabilities during the Holidays. CARH is well aware that for many of our clients these events may be the only Christmas festivity they will attend. Therefore, CARH goes all out to make sure the Jingle Bell Balls are more than memorable. The events are held in the most elegant of settings and provide our guests a fabulous dining experience with spectacular entertainment, including the famous Tap Dancing Christmas Trees and Live DJ. Other highlights include a raffle, dancing, Christmas caroling, and the best for last, a personal visit from Mr. and Mrs Claus bearing gifts for all! It gives CARH great pleasure to know the difference we make in the lives of so many special individuals during the most wonderful time of year and we could not do it without the support of our community. We would like to thank all of our volunteers and donors for your generous contributions!!

CARH’s “Top 40 Challenge” Fundraiser

CARH’s “Top 40 Challenge” Fundraiser
As part of CARH’s 40th Anniversary celebrations, we are inviting all of Castro Valley businesses to choose us as their charity partner for 2012; to help raise funds to support our Campership program which sends individuals with intellectual disabilities to summer camp. The goal of our “Top 40 Challenge” is to raise $40,000 between February 1st and April 30th. All monies raised will go directly toward supporting our 2013 Campership Program. Some suggestions for helping us raise the money are the following; placing a collection box by a businesses cash register, coffee machine, or both, asking an employee to donate one hour ’s pay, holding a raffle, asking for corporate sponsorship, or simply writing a check. Any business or individual can help us with the “Top 40 Challenge”. At the conclusion of the campaign, all participating businesses and individuals will be invited to join us at a “Top 40 Challenge” Thank You Reception at CARH Headquarters in Castro Valley in May. Thank You!

In Loving Memory of Kurt Harrison.

CARH received the news that our longtime and beloved client passed away on December 22nd. All of us at CARH are deeply saddened by Kurt’s passing especially during the holiday season. Kurt has been an active recipient of CARH’s services and programs for many years. Kurt’s parents, Rosemarie and Lee Dix, and his aunt, Audry Schumacher, are huge CARH supporters and have been dedicated volunteers throughout the years helping at our many annual events. Despite his disabilities, Kurt always wore a smile, and brought joy to those around him. Kurt was a gentle soul who loved to have fun. Kurt never missed the opportunity to attend one of CARH’s special events. Over the years Kurt has volunteered to be a model at our Unique En Vogue Fashion Shows and rarely missed one of our Movie Mat inees. He also loved to play Bingo. He became a big part of the CARH family. We would like to extend our condolences to Kurt’s family, including Kurt’s longtime care provider, Wendi Hancock, who was always at his side. He was an inspirational man and dear friend who touched all of our lives. With a heavy heart Kurt will be missed by everyone at CARH. Remembering him will lift our spirits.

San Francisco photographer, J. John Priola wanted to add a social practice element to his photo exhibition titled “Philanthropy” at the Gallery Paule Anglim at 14 Geary Blvd. in San Francisco open from November 30^th through December 23^rd 2011. In doing so he is encouraging all of those who visit the exhibition to bring any gently used and new clothing, household items, toys, puzzles, books and other items to the gallery. A separate room has been set up to collect the donations and is monitored by a live feed camera. To watch as the donation pile grows you can visit the gallery website at www.gallerypauleanglim.com. Thank you John for your innovative way of helping us at CARH support our programs and services for our clients with intellectual disabilities. We are honored that you selected us as beneficiary of your project. We are grateful to have such a talented and passionate individual join our efforts in enriching the lives of those we serve. Since 1980, CARH’s Visiting Santa Program has been spreading holiday cheer throughout the month of December. This wonderful CARH tradition, which serves Adult Day Programs for those living with intellectual disabilities, brings joy to thousands of individuals living throughout the Bay Area. This year, CARH’s Santa along with his helpers will have once again delivered over 1500 gifts. This program like so many of our programs are instrumental in making sure that those we serve are not overlooked during the holidays. We would like to thank all of our volunteers who “suited up” to bring happiness to so many of our friends throughout the season. We would also like to thank our Santa Sew volunteers who made the wonderful gifts that were given. Having your support is the best gift of all. From all of us at CARH Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year!!

CARH’s Harvest Moon Dance was absolutely spectacular. The Ascension Greek Orthodox Church provided the most beautiful venue for our dance on Saturday, October 29th. The church nestled in the Oakland hills others an amazing panoramic view of the Bay Area. At night, thousands of dazzling lights create an even more brilliant view. On this partcular evening, a gorgeous dark red sunset and crescent moon provided the perfect ambience for our Halloween celebration. The event attracted 313 patrons, all of whom arrived dressed for the occasion in fabulous costumes.

To start the party right, each guest received a gift at the door, followed by an evening of fun. Live DJ, David Goulart, of Unforgettable Memories, played an excellent mix of dance tunes, including many Halloween favorites such as the Monster Mash, Thriller, and Ghost Busters. The dance ﬂoor inside the Thomas J. Paris Room quickly ﬁlled with dancing feet. When our guests were not dancing they enjoyed mingling and making friends. The craft tables were crowded too. It was here, that our guests had fun making decorative spooky bats, spiders, and pumpkin art. The raffle was also a huge hit. Many of our guests won some adorable Halloween themed stuﬀed animals. A special treat, was having Fuddruckers restaurant owner George Almeda attend.

He personally volunteered and catered the event providing the most delicious cheeseburgers to go with our chips and drinks. Our guests also enjoyed Starbucks pastries for dessert, and an endless supply of candy and popcorn. It was a fabulous and memorable event for all. We would like to thank George Almeda, and the wonderful band of volunteers for bringing great joy to those we serve.

Dental Hygiene Program and Wonderful You Day

CARH founder, Leo Guidotti, knew that there was a vital need for dental care among our special needs community and he envisioned CARH providing dental services to our clients. Although Leo would not see his vision develop, he would be pleased that our Mobile Dental Hygiene Program has been very successful in making a positive impact in the health of our clients.

Since the start of our program in 2005 CARH has been promoting the importance of dental care. With the support of our local community donors and the expertise of dental hygienists, Vicki and Clair from Diversified Mobile Smiles, Inc. our clients are receiving healthier beautiul smiles. The program has also proven to be a popular and convenient alternative for our clients who prefer to have their teeth cleaned in a familiar and relaxed atmosphere. Pictured, clients at CARH’s Michael Guidotti Center are showing off their brighter smiles after getting a teeth cleaning. CARH’s 25th Annual Unique En Vogue Fashion Show/Fundraiser held at the Greek Orthodox Church in Castro Valley on September 24th, received rave reviews. The spectacular event drew over 230 spectators who purchased tickets to help support CARH’s on going programs and services. Unveiling the latest Fall fashions, the show accentuated the trendy apparel and accessories to be found at bargain prices when shopping at Thrift Town. While CARH’s fashion show/fundraiser allows us to spotlight our 39 year partnership with Norquist Salvage Corp (NSC) operator of Thrift Town stores, it is our very special models who make our fashion shows unique. All of our models are registered CARH clients living with intellectual disabilities. Each year we have numerous requests from our clients asking if they can be a model in our fashion show. Many of our clients relish the thought of being a star at this special event that helps raise funds for their favorite charity. This year’s fashion show featured classic ensembles put together by Fashion Stylist, Ria Gassoumis. Ria is a remarkable and talented lady who put together 30 stylish outfits compiled from garments found at Thrift Town in San Leandro and Fremont. Our models were stunning and didn't hold back when they hit the runway showcasing the “must haves” for Fall. Other highlights included the silent auction, raffle, book faire and a delightful performance by Ball Room Dancers, Shin and Brad, who danced the Waltz during intermission. In addition, our guests enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch including champagne cocktails catered by Savory Fare Catering.

Special guest and radio host, Steve Fox of KKIQ/East Bay DJ’s graciously accepted to be this year’s Emcee and DJ. He did a sensational job with the commentary describing each detail of tailored attire as our models strutted down the red carpet. Steve’s charismatic and electrifying personality helped rouse our audience getting everyone to participate in the raffle and silent auction which helped raise much needed funds. Also adding to the excitement was Marinello Schools of Beauty. Their Regional Outreach Representative, Kelly Griffin, generously helped organize a team of student volunteers, aka “The Glam Squad”, to do hair and makeup. They did an amazing job adding the professional touches needed to transform our models into super stars. We would like to thank everyone who played a role in the success of our 25th Annual Unique En Vogue Fashion Show/Fundraiser. This includes, the generosity of this year’s sponsors and businesses (featured on page 5 of our news letter next week), who contributed the wonderful auction items, raffle prizes, and monetary donations. In addition, we would like to thank Marinello Schools of Beauty for making our models look and feel absolutely fabulous, and all who attended. We would also like to give a special thank you to Steve Fox, Ria Gassoumis, and Ball Room dancer’s Shin and Brad for taking the time to help support this event, and for recognizing the difference our charity makes in the lives of so many special needs individuals.

More importantly, thank you to all of our models. You looked marvelous and did an excellent job in making this year’s Fashion Show one to remember. Thank you!!

A gorgeous, sunny, blue sky created the perfect day on Saturday, August 20th for CARH to host
it’s annual CARH Day at Six Flags. A total of 400 clients registered to a end this special e!ent
held at Six Flags Disco!ery Kingdom in Vallejo. Everyone enjoyed a fabulous private buffet
lunch ser!ed at the Picnic Gro!es picnic site followed by an exhilara.ng and fun filled
afternoon full of theme park attractions. There -as something for e!eryone. A number
of our thrill seeking clients enjoyed the 40 exciting rides, including the ne- SkyScreamer.
While some of our less adventurous clients -ere delighted by the -ildlife sho-s such as

Sometimes you never know how blessed you are in the moment unless someone points it out. As I was taking photos yesterday, a zoo keeper was telling an observer how rare it is to see a Giraffe drink water because they are so vulnerable when they do. It was a highlight of her career, and a reminder --how simple things are blessings. Some of CARH Clients also had a chance to witness this moment inbetween their Safari hunt to find Sea Otters, Lions, Zebras, Elephants, Pink Flamingo’s and the rest of the Animal kingdom that hangs out at the Oakland Zoo. There is nothing like seeing these beautiful animals in person and to watch them do their thing. Good luck getting a still picture of a Sea Otter when it’s feeding time, they move like torpedo’s under the water. Enjoy the close ups of these fine animals on facebook with our clients.

CARH Celebrates Barbara Guidotti

In honor of CARH Founder and Volunteer, Barbara Guidotti, a surprise dinner and birthday party was held on July 5th, at the Willow Park Event Center in Castro Valley. Barbara was fooled in thinking that she was just going to dinner to celebrate her birthday with a couple of close friends. Little did she know that CARH’s staff, board members, family and friends were waiting for her arrival. When Barbara entered the room over 80 guests simultaneously shouted out “Surprise” and started to sing “Happy Birthday”! Barbara was definitely surprised! She has always been modest about being the founder of CARH and has shunned any attention. The event gave all of us who know and love her an opportunity to celebrate her birthday and a chance to honor her for the many years she has dedicated to helping others. In 1972 Barbara and her late husband, Leo Guidotti, founded CARH, Inc. with the inspiration from their severely disabled son, Michael. Leo and Barbara knew first hand that many of his special needs were not being met by governmental or other agencies. They looked to the local community to support their efforts to provide children and adults with intellectual disabilities with life enriching programs and services funded by a household recycling program. They were successful in rousing community support and almost 40 years later CARH continues to make a difference in their lives by providing campership grants, general grants supporting medical and dental needs, and a wide variety of programs and services. Leo and Barbara’s determination helped bridge the gap for our special needs community in a society that sometimes overlooks the needs of those living with disabilities. Giving recognition to Barbara is long overdue. It was a joyous and emotional event. A number of our guests got up to the podium to express their heartfelt thanks to Barbara and CARH for the impact that she has made to their clients and loved ones. Particularly touching was when parent, Michelle Smith and her son, Blake, got up to talk about how CARH has helped her family in so many ways by making sure that Cameron, their severely disabled son/brother got the little extras that he needed to make his life enjoyable. Michelle referred to Barbara as an angel on earth and presented her with an angel figurine. The bleak weather with gusty winds and overcast skies did not discourage 865 guests from attending CARH’s “32nd Annual Picnic”. Held on June 11th at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton, our picnic was a huge success providing a fun filled day for those we serve living with intellectual disabilities. Despite a dreary forecast, all of our guests arrived wearing smiles and determined to have a great time. By noon the clouds were gone, the jackets were off, and the festivities were in full swing. Mouthwatering barbecue, laughter and music filled the air. All of our friends enjoyed a scrumptious lunch, singing and dancing to their favorite hits provided by Unforgettable Memories’ DJ, David, a cake walk, lawn activities, including t-ball, rib it ball and just relaxing on the lush green lawn, yes, even “napping”. The real excitement though, could be heard coming from the game area. Shrieks of joy and cheers echoed throughout the park as our guests played for prizes at the numerous game booths. Games included football hurl, horseshoes, bag-a-balloon, lasso golf, fish bonkers, ring-a-duck, and bowling. But that’s not all! The very popular and magnificent artist and face painter, “Poppy”, was busy creating works of art on the cheeks and arms of our many friends and clients. CARH’s Annual Picnic has been a favorite event among our growing number of clients, and this year was no different. Over the years our picnic has become a big happy reunion among friends. For our staff, volunteers, care providers, families and clients it is an exciting event that we all look forward to every year. We would like to thank this year’s many volunteers and local donors for making this a special day for everyone.

CARH has sent thousands of clients to camp for over 37 years. The campership program is a very special program where clients meet new friends and enjoy many activities to experience a little more independence among Mother Nature. Today we got a little taste of the beautiful setting in the Santa Cruz Mountains at Camp Harmon, an Easter Seals program. Easter Seals raved how important CARH’s support is to maintain their program. In total, this year CARH sponsored over 125 clients. Which in effect really is possible from the generous support of the community. CARH’s En Vogue Unique Fashion Show held at the Cornerstone Restaurant & Head Hunters Lounge, in downtown Sacramento, received rave reviews. This fabulous event took place on Friday, May 20th, and is the first of two Unique Fashion Show/Fundraisers hosted by CARH each year. Our Fashion Shows are the only fundraisers hosted by CARH that generate funds for our ongoing programs and services that enrich the lives of those living with intellectual disabilities. CARH’s services reach out to those living in Alameda, Contra Costa, Solano and Sacramento Counties. This year marks Sacramento’s 3rd Annual En Vogue Unique Fashion Show. The event was a huge success in attracting over 150 supportive spectators. Highlights included, a live and silent auction, raffle, fabulous food, cocktails, Live DJ/Musician Ron Davis, and Project Runway (a fashion design competition, featuring three local designers) in which our audience chose the winner of their favorite fashion design inspired by clothing found at Thrift Town stores. This was all topped off with a finale of a spectacular fashion show, put on by our very special models (CARH’s clients), organized by CARH Marketing Director, Liz Crawford, and Fashion Stylist, Kari Shipman. It was an exhilarating evening.

All of our guests enjoyed an open buffet of delectable food, cocktails and mingling, as they browsed the auction tables for great deals. An autographed guitar signed by the Rolling Stones, and a 49’s football signed by team players were just a few of the remarkable items up for auction.

Once announced that the show was to begin, our guests made their way to an arena of seats surrounded by red carpet in the restaurant’s courtyard. Private cabana’s were reserved for our very generous sponsors. The courtyard was beautifully decorated in red and black themed décor delivering a romantic ambience.

Special Guest, Kristen Marshall, of KCRA News, generously volunteered to EMCEE the event and commenced the show with an exciting introduction. Kristen did an amazing job introducing each model as they sported their haute couture attire. Taking the runway by storm, our vivacious models rocked the red carpet captivating the audience with chic ensembles created by Fashion Stylist, Kari Shipman.

CARH’s Fashion Shows are unique in that our special needs models feature fashion finds that may be found at bargain prices at local Thrift Town stores. The fashion show/fundraiser not only helps to raise funds for CARH’s programs and services, but also provides those we serve a unique opportunity to shine in the spotlight. We have found over the years that our clients love modeling at our shows, and we wouldn't have it any other way. Our models are not only stunning, and charismatic, but they are “good at it”. The fashion show is also a perfect opportunity to highlight CARH’s longstanding partnership with Norquist Salvage Corp (NSC) and their Thrift Town stores. Moreover, it allows our charity to promote the benefits of donating and recycling gently used clothing while showcasing the deals to be made when shopping at Thrift Town. Even the most avid and picky shopper can appreciate a good buy when shopping for vintage or name brand fashions.
